West Town / River West
West Town
The Chicago neighborhoods of Wicker Park and Ukrainian Village are part of the northwest area of the city known as West Town. More so than other north side Chicago neighborhood, Wicker Park has been a haven for the arts and counter-culture, especially in recent years. It is home to many of Chicago’s finest artisan-led galleries and stores and one of the largest communities of working artists in Chicago. The official West Town Community Area boundaries are Bloomingdale to the north (just north of North Ave.), the Chicago River to the east, Kinzie to the south, and Kedzie to the west. West Town is conveniently located approximately 2 miles west of downtown Chicago.
River West
River West is a relatively new Chicago neighborhood, known once for its meatpacking houses and distribution centers. However, in recent years it has experienced a cultural revitalization. River West has long been known to Chicago residents as a market district for wholesale goods; as well as a major artery in the west side of Chicago’s manufacturing corridor. Though the warehouses still stand in much of River West, the area has become increasingly residential. The recent influx of wealthy residents followed two major developments: a rapidly increasing arts scene and a progressively reputable venue for nightlife and restaurants. Artists first moved in to capitalize on economical rents, which started the gradual transformation from a meatpacking and industrial district to one that draws art enthusiasts and foodies on the weekends.
In the style of transforming an old warehouse district into a viable residential neighborhood, River West is full of converted loft spaces, new construction townhomes, three-flats, and condominiums, which happen to be prime real estate on Chicago’s housing market. Reminiscent of its industrial days, the River West community is definitely part of the concrete and steel jungle of city living, but the contemporary designs and modernity of the freshly rehabbed buildings provide a clean and innovative environment that is appealing to Chicagoans. Therefore, trendy designs and upgraded amenities have become the norm for this hip, new community in the heart of the near north side. So, whatever your price range, take some time to look around, and check out the options, chances are you will find that perfect dream home.
