Logan Square
Logan Square is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Chicago; as it was founded in the early 20th century and named after General John A. Logan, a Union Army general in the Civil War. General John A. Logan served as an Illinois senator, ran for Vice President of the United States and founded the national Memorial Day holiday. Logan Square was a destination for wealthy immigrants and it soon grew to be a home of wealthy mansions in addition to hard-working community members. A statue in Logan Square commemorates Illinois’ centennial with an eagle atop a column.
The community area of Logan Square is, in general, bounded by the Metra/Milwaukee District North Line railroad on the west, the North Branch of the Chicago River on the east, Diversey Avenue on the north, and Bloomingdale Avenue on the south.
Logan Square is known equally for its prosperous, mansion-lined residential streets and its bustling, diverse commercial districts. Flowers and trees line the streets, and homes are known for being well-kept. The neighborhood manages to present an air of old-world prosperity as well as a thoroughly modern and progressive attitude.
With a variety of available housing from mansions, bungalow-style homes, to condos and townhomes Logan Square has become a sought after neighborhood for families searching for great schools and a caring community. Young professionals mingle with working-class residents to form a diverse area and make Logan Square an affordable, safe place to live. Logan Square’s real estate market is booming yet very reasonably priced. Old two-flats and single-family homes sit next to affordable condos and apartment buildings. Many houses have garage parking, and street parking in Logan Square is plentiful. Logan Square is a mix of historic and new.
Community Features:
- The Congress Theatre is a national landmark and one of Logan Square’s greatest architectural treasures.
- The Illinois Centennial Monument is an impressive site: a 27-foot-tall stone obelisk topped with an eagle which celebrates the Illinois State Centennial, marks the heart of the actual Logan Square.
- Beautiful century-old mansions can be seen at The Historic Mansion Housewalk held every September.
